The recent heatwave has certainly made its presence felt. While many of us enjoy the sunshine, prolonged periods of high temperatures can take a toll on our health, energy levels and overall wellbeing.
Have you noticed that you're feeling more tired than usual?
Struggling with night sweats, hot flushes, dizziness or disrupted sleep?
You're certainly not alone.
As temperatures rise, our bodies have to work much harder to regulate themselves, which can leave us feeling drained and uncomfortable.
The good news is that there are simple lifestyle changes, including some gentle Ayurvedic practices, that may help us stay cooler and more balanced during hot weather.
How Is the Heat Affecting You?
Many people I’ve spoken to over last couple of days are reporting:
Night sweats and restless sleep
Increased hot flushes
Fatigue and low energy
Dizziness or light-headedness
Headaches
Irritability and brain fog
Reduced appetite
Poor sleep can often make everything feel worse.
After a restless night spent tossing and turning, it's no surprise that motivation, concentration and mood can suffer the following day.
Cooling Your Body the Ayurvedic Way
In Ayurveda, summer is associated with an increase in Pitta dosha, which governs heat, metabolism and transformation within the body.
When Pitta becomes excessive, symptoms such as overheating, irritability, inflammation and hot flushes can become more noticeable.
To help balance excess heat, Ayurveda recommends focusing on cooling foods, calming routines and gentle self-care practices.
Choose Cooling Foods
Include foods that naturally help cool the body:
Cucumber
Watermelon
Coconut water
Mint
Fresh berries
Leafy greens
Courgettes
Melon
Coriander
Try to limit very spicy foods, excessive caffeine and alcohol, which may increase internal heat and contribute to dehydration.
Stay Hydrated
Sip water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you feel thirsty.
You might also enjoy:
Cucumber-infused water
Mint tea served cool
Coconut water
Herbal teas such as fennel or peppermint
Cool Showers and Foot Baths
A cool (rather than icy cold) shower can provide immediate relief and help lower body temperature, especially before bedtime.
If you're struggling with hot feet at night, try soaking them in cool water for a few minutes before getting into bed.
This simple practice can feel surprisingly refreshing and may support better sleep.
Creating a Cooler Sleep Environment
Sleep can be one of the biggest challenges during a heatwave.
A few simple adjustments may help:
Choose Natural Fabrics
Lightweight cotton bedding allows air to circulate more freely and helps move moisture away from the skin.
Similarly, loose-fitting cotton bed wear can make a significant difference in helping your body stay comfortable overnight.
Avoid synthetic fabrics where possible, as they can trap heat and increase sweating.
Keep the Bedroom Cool
Open windows during cooler evening hours.
Close curtains or blinds during the hottest parts of the day.
Use a fan to improve air circulation.
Keep a glass of water beside the bed.
Some people also find that placing a cool cloth on the forehead or neck before sleep can help them drift off more comfortably.
Listen to What Your Body Needs
One of the most important lessons during a heatwave is learning to slow down when necessary.
If you're feeling tired, dizzy or overwhelmed by the heat, give yourself permission to rest. Gentle walks in the early morning, lighter meals and a calmer pace of life can help support your body's natural cooling mechanisms.
Remember, self-care isn't a luxury—it's essential, especially when temperatures are pushing our bodies beyond their comfort zone.
