Off-Grid Bliss in Port Charles: A 3-Night Spring Escape at the 'Ruru Room'

There’s something about the northern tip of the Coromandel Peninsula that feels wonderfully untouched. Rugged, remote and wildly beautiful — it’s the kind of place where you can properly exhale.

Craig and I are always on the lookout for small, off-grid, cabin-style escapes with a serious wow factor — our kind of short break. Over the years we’ve found some absolute gems through Canopy Camping Escapes, and this particular stay was no exception.

Finding “The One”

We’d been browsing for a special little treat in the Coromandel when one property kept popping up — almost like it was calling us. When I checked availability, it was one of the first options free for our dates. Even better? We were travelling in New Zealand’s spring shoulder season and managed to secure a 3-for-2 deal — which felt very meant to be.

Set high above a bay in the quiet settlement of Port Charles, the Ruru Room instantly stood out. The photos, the positioning, the outdoor space — it had that undeniable pull.

And in real life? It was even better.

The Arrival: A View That Stops You in Your Tracks

Driving up the tropical tree-lined hill driveway, anticipation builds with every turn. At the top, perched proudly in its elevated position, sit two quaint cabins connected by a wooden walkway that wraps around to the front deck.

You step inside the first cabin — the bedroom and kitchen space — and immediately you’re met with floor-to-ceiling patio doors.

And the view?

“WOW” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Panoramic sea views stretch in every direction. The bed is perfectly positioned so you wake to that endless blue horizon — a luxury that feels both grounding and indulgent all at once.

We made full use of that deck:

• Morning coffee watching the tide shift

• Evening wine as the sun dipped

• Slow breakfasts and relaxed dinners outdoors

• My sunrise workouts and meditation sessions

• Quiet writing time wrapped in sea air and birdsong

It was the ultimate space to reconnect — with nature and with ourselves.

Simple, Thoughtful Luxury

Inside, the cabin is beautifully simple yet luxurious. The open-plan bedroom and kitchen area is incredibly well equipped for a fully self-catered stay. Everything has been considered.

One thing to note — this is true remote living. You absolutely need to plan ahead and bring your supplies with you, as there’s nothing nearby. The closest café and basic provisions are about 40 minutes away in Colville. But honestly? That’s part of the charm. It forces you to slow down, prepare well and stay present.

The second cabin, houses the shower room along with a washing machine and tumble dryer — an added touch we really appreciated. When you’re active, exploring, swimming and travelling light, having laundry facilities is a small luxury that makes a big difference.

Barefoot Evenings & Ocean Moments

From the cabins, it’s an easy stroll down to the rocks and beach below. At high tide, it’s perfect for a swim, and Craig happily spent time fishing off the point while I sat quietly watching rays glide past the rocks in the early evening light.

Those simple, unfiltered moments — salty air, gentle waves, golden light — are the ones that stay with you.

Why We’ll Be Back

The Ruru Room is an absolute find — a remote treasure that delivers privacy, comfort and soul-soothing views in equal measure.

For us, it ticked every box:
