Travel Smart, Not Expensive: Secrets to Exploring Without Breaking the Bank

If you’re anything like me, the words travel and adventure instantly spark excitement… right up until you check your bank balance.

Exploring new places, soaking up different cultures, and escaping the everyday is one of life’s greatest joys—but doing it without draining your savings?

Now that’s the real win.

Here at Eat Clean, Health and Dream, today I am going to be diving into some of my favourite tried-and-tested travel hacks to help you see more of the world for less. Whether you’re planning a big getaway or just a cheeky night away, these tips might just make your next trip that little bit sweeter (and cheaper).

I’ll admit, I don’t travel quite as much as I’d like (yet!), but I do get away fairly often—and somehow, I’ve become the go-to person among friends and family for flight tips, booking tricks, and saving money. So with holiday season creeping in (or already in full swing depending on where you are), I thought I’d share a few gems that have genuinely worked for me.

Tip 1: Browse Smart – Go Incognito

You’ve probably heard this one before, but it’s worth repeating because it can make a difference. When searching for flights or holidays, try using private or incognito mode on your browser.

Also, avoid doing your serious booking searches at weekends—especially Sundays—when prices often spike due to higher traffic. Midweek browsing tends to be a safer bet.

Tip 2: Make Loyalty Work for You

If you’re not already using booking platforms with loyalty schemes, you could be missing out on some serious perks.

Sites like Hotels.com, Expedia, Vrbo, and Booking.com all offer rewards programmes. Over time, these can lead to free nights, discounts, or even room upgrades. I’ve personally reached Platinum level on Hotels.com, and the savings and extras we’ve had over time have been so worth it.

Tip 3: Compare Everything (Including Going Direct)

This is a big one and often overlooked. While booking platforms are convenient, they’re not always the cheapest option.

Before confirming your stay:

  • Check the same property across multiple platforms

  • Look it up directly on the hotel or accommodation’s own website

  • Compare with Airbnb.com or other hosting sites

Sometimes, booking direct can save money because the property avoids platform fees—and they might even throw in extras like breakfast or late checkout.

A perfect example: we recently booked a last-minute 4-night stay in Zakynthos for a 2-bedroom villa. After comparing options, we ended up booking through Expedia.com—and saved over £160 compared to the same listing elsewhere. Definitely worth the extra few minutes of research!

Tip 4: Take Advantage of Cashback on Booking Platforms

A lot of people don’t realise that booking platforms themselves often reward you beyond just points. Hotels.com, for example, offers cashback-style rewards you can build up and use against future stays.

They regularly run boosted offers, and as your loyalty level increases, so does your reward percentage. One of their recent deals? Book 10 nights and get £100 in Hotels.com credit. It’s essentially money back on trips you were already planning—hard to argue with that!

Tip 5: Use Cashback Sites for Extra Savings

Before you book anything, take a quick detour via cashback sites like Quidco.com or Top Cashback. It only takes a minute to click through, and you could earn anywhere from 5% to 12% (sometimes more) back.

The best part? This applies to loads of travel-related purchases:

  • Flights

  • Hotels and accommodations

  • Car hire and parking

  • Travel insurance

  • Activities and days out

A couple of months later, that cashback lands in your account or as a gift card—easy savings for doing something you were already going to do anyway.

Tip 6: Compare Package vs DIY Trips

It’s always worth checking both package holidays and booking everything separately. Sometimes packages can offer great value, especially with added protection—but other times, putting in a bit of extra effort and booking flights and accommodation yourself can save a small fortune.

A little extra research can go a long way here.

Tip 7: Use Flight Comparison Tools (and Get Creative)

Flight search engines like Skyscanner and Kayak are brilliant starting points. Don’t just search returns—try:

  • One-way flights

  • Multi-city routes

  • Mixing airlines

If you’re going long haul, consider breaking the journey up.

For example, on a trip to New Zealand, we split our journey into two parts—London to Bali return, then Bali to Auckland booked separately. Not only did it save money, but it also gave us a bonus stopover!

Always double-check prices directly on airline websites too, as sometimes you’ll find the same (or better) deals there.

Tip 8: Airline Points & Loyalty Schemes

If you fly even semi-regularly, airline loyalty schemes are well worth joining—especially if the airlines are part of the same alliance.

You can earn points not just on flights, but on everyday spending and partner purchases too.

These points can then be used for:

  • Seat upgrades

  • Discounted flights

  • Lounge access

  • Extra baggage

We’ve been lucky enough to enjoy upgrades and perks with airlines like Qantas and Air New Zealand and Emirates and it definitely makes a difference to the travel experience.

Tip 9: Lounge Access – Worth Every Penny

This has been a bit of a game-changer for us, especially on long-haul trips or long layovers.

Airport lounges often include:

  • Unlimited food and drinks

  • Comfortable seating

  • Charging points

  • Wi-Fi

  • Showers and relaxation areas

When you add up what you’d spend in the airport on meals, coffees, and snacks—not to mention the comfort factor—it can actually work out as great value. Plus, it’s a much calmer environment if you want to work, read, or just unwind.

Tip 10: Use Airport Facilities

This is a slightly underrated tip but such a good one—check what facilities your airport offers.

Some airports have:

  • Gyms or health clubs

  • Swimming pools

  • Shower facilities

We’ve used the health club at Dubai Airport a couple of times—pool, sauna, hot tub, and showers for around $30. After a long flight, it’s honestly one of the best ways to reset before the next leg of your journey and on these occasions we have had the pool and facilities to our selves. Some deals even give you lounge access as well.

Tip 11: Don’t Always Book Too Early

It might sound counterintuitive, but booking super early isn’t always the cheapest option.

Sign up to airline mailing lists and keep an eye on deals.

Some of our best bargains have been booked just 1–2 weeks before travel. Of course, this won’t work for every trip (especially peak times), but if you’ve got flexibility, it can really pay off.

Final Thoughts

Travel doesn’t have to be expensive to be unforgettable. With a bit of planning, some savvy searching, and a willingness to think outside the box, you can stretch your budget further than you might expect.

For me, it’s all about enjoying those experiences without the financial stress—because the more you save, the sooner you can plan the next adventure.

I hope these tips help with your next trip!
